New Delhi,Akash Dwivedi-Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, Vijender Gupta today strongly condemned the Aam Aadami Party’s serious attempts to politicalize the unfortunate incident of fire which broke out in the morning at Bhalaswa Sanitary Landfill Site. He said that it is a strange that leader after leader including the Environment Minister, Imran Hussain, Chairman, DJB, Kapil Mishra, Ashutosh, Dilip Pandey have made concerted and mischievous attempts to put the entire blame on BJP for causing fire to spread pollution in the city and fail the odd-even scheme. Gupta said that nothing can be more ridiculous and far from truth then blaming BJP for what is a natural phenomenon in truth. Leader of Opposition said that fire at Sanitary Landfill Sites is caused due to reaction of methane and other gaseous substances. This is common not only in India but in foreign countries too. During summer, the sites become more prone to fires due to complex combustible chain reactions. The summer season and fairly good movement of air added fuel to fire today morning at Bhalaswa. The fire at the site is not a new for first-time phenomenon. This has been happening for many years now. It is highly condemnable to link the fire to odd-even scheme. A natural phenomenon cannot be linked to a social event of this nature and BJP cannot be blamed for this. Delhi Pollution Control Committee had already carried out the inspection in February and March. It has been felt that the Sanitary Landfill Sites have outlived their lives by many years and not much can be done in the given circumstances. Gupta said that the Bhalaswa Santitary Site was developed in 1994 according to the existing rules and regulations on the subject. The Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2000 came into force much later. The site at Bhalaswa receives 2200 metric ton garbage everyday. Even the sites at Gazipur and Okhla were developed much before the MSW Rules came into being in 2000. All the three sites followed the existing rules and cannot match the provisions of the new rules. Everyone knows the difficulties being faced in obtaining land for sanitary landfill sites. Gupta said that in order to prevent fire, malba and soft land is spread over the garbage. The water is spread through sprinklers.
