North Delhi Mayor Dr. Sanjeev Nayyar along with Standing Committee
Chairman Mr. Mohan Prasad Bhardwaj; Leader of House Mr. Vijay Prakash Pandey;
nominated Chairman of Standing Committee Mr. Pravesh Wahi; Commissioner Mr.
Praveen Gupta and other senior officials inspected the waste-to-energy plant
being developed at Narela-Bawana Sanitary Landfill Site.
During the inspection, they were briefed about the working process of
the plant and conversion of waste into energy. Mayor said that the plant is
likely to be dedicated to citizens in first week of the next month. He said
that it is one of the biggest projects of the country.
He
informed that 1300 MT of waste would be disposed of daily to convert it into 24
mega watts of electricity. Dr. Nayyar said that the waste dumped here so far
has been converted into Refused Derived Fuel and as soon the plant starts
functioning this RDF would be used as fuel. This would help in disposal of
waste and local residents would get rid of the foul smell and piles of waste,
he said.
Mr.
Mohan Bhardwaj said that this plant is important in light of Prime Minister’s
‘Swachh Bharat Mission’. He said that the plant has been developed on modern
lines and it is unlikely to harm the environment in any way. Mr. Gupta informed
that with the beginning of this plant, about 80 to 85 percent solid waste
decomposed here would be disposed completely and converted into compost and electricity.
He said that North DMC has collaborated with a private partner Ramky Solid
Waste Management Solutions for this project.
Chairman of the project, Mr. DBSSR Shastri informed about process of the
plant’s working. He said that application has been made to Delhi Pollution
Control Committee for consent to operate the waste-to-energy plant. He said
that it is hoped that soon permission would be obtained and it would be
dedicated to the citizens.
On
this occasion, some local residents complained to the Mayor about foul smell
which emanates from the plant. The Mayor directed the project convenor to plant
more trees and sprinkle chemical etc. regularly to do away with the smell for
